History

The Walnut Creek Greenbelt is a protected natural area located in the city of Austin, Texas. The area was originally named the Walnut Creek Nature Preserve when it was established in 1998 by the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department. The preserve was created to protect the area’s natural resources and to provide public recreational opportunities. The area is home to various birds, reptiles, mammals, and amphibians. The area is also home to several endangered species, including the Texas Blind Salamander and the Black-capped Vireo. 

In 2003, the Walnut Creek Greenbelt was officially designated as a City of Austin Park. The park is composed of two parts: the Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park and the Walnut Creek Preserve. The park covers approximately 2,611 acres and includes several miles of trails, a variety of recreational facilities, and a vibrant wildlife habitat. The park is a popular destination for hikers, runners, cyclists, and birdwatchers.
